Springtime Magic Lanterne

Springtime Magic Lanterne
(Gå til norsk oppskrift)
It has been a wonderful summer here at the vest coast of Norway. And when the weather is nice end dry!, it's so much fun to decorate outside. I love to sit outside in the garden into the late Norwegian summer nights and I love to decorate my garden, and my trees, with lots of lights.

I designed this lantern four years ago. It's this lantern that has been my inspiration when making my  Springtime Magic Coasters, the Springtime Magic Mandala og the Rustic Market Bag. Therefore I think this cute, little thing deserves it's own pattern.

You need:
 Yarn ; Cotton yarn, 5 ply (8/4 cotton / Sport / 24-26 stitches)
I've used Tilda Cotton Eco
 Hook, 3 mm
 Scissors
 Needle
 A small, empty jar
Diameter, bottom: 7,5-8 cm
Hight: 4,5 cm
Hight bottom till neck: 3,5 cm
If your jar doesn't have these reassureres, you may have to adjust your stitches or use a different hook size
 Hamp twine (optional)
 A small piece of cardboard or a bank card
 A small button (optional)
 Beeds (optional)

Abbreviations, US terms
rnd = round
ss = slip stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
ch-sp = chain space
bldc = back loop double crochet (crochet trough back loop only)
dc2tog = double crochet 2 together
[example]x3 = Work the instructions inside the [-] as many times as the number after the x.

Lanterne
It's important to check that the cover fits, during the process. Maybe you'll need to adjust your number of stitches or maybe you'll need to use a bigger or smaller hook to make the cover fit.

Once the bottom is finished, after rnd 5, it should be a bit smaller or the same size as the bottom of the jar.

If a round starts  with a dc, the first dc is replaced by ch3 or a Faux double crochet. Finish with 1 ss in 3rd ch, if you replaced the 1st dc with ch3
Work a magic ring (or ch4, ss in 1st ch)
If you're going to attach your tassel with a button, make sure the hole in the middle doesn't get too small.

  1. Ch2, 1 dc in the ring = 1 dc2tog *ch1, dc2tog in the ring*, repeat from*-* four more times, finish with a sc in 1st dc = 1 ch1-sp, (6 dc2tog)
  2.  2 dc in the last ch1-sp (sc), [(2 dc, ch1, 2 dc) in next ch-sp]X5, finish with 2 dc in the last ch1-sp (sc), 1 sc in 1st dc = 1 ch1-sp, (24 dc + 6 ch)
  3. 4 dc in the last ch1-sp 2, [7 dc in next ch-sp]x5, 3 dc in the last ch1-sp, finish with a ss in 1st dc, (6 petals)
  4. Ch1 = 1 sc, ch3, 1 dc in between the last dc in a ch-sp and the first dc in the next ch-sp on rnd 2, ch3, *1 sc i the 4th dc in next petal, ch3, 1 dc in between the last dc in a ch-sp and the first dc in the next ch-sp on rnd 2, ch3* repeat from *-* 4 more times, finish with 1 ss in 1st ch, (12 ch3-sp)
  5. 1dc in 1st sc (ch1), 3 dc in next ch3-sp, 2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next ch3-sp, *1 dc in next sc, 3 dc in next ch3-sp, 2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next ch-sp*, repeat from *-* around, finish with 1 ss in 1st dc. (54 dc)
  6. 1 bldc in each dc around, finish with 1 ss in 1st dc (54 dc)
  7. Ch2, 1 dc in the 1st dc = 1 dc2tog, ch2, skip 2 dc, *dc2tog in next dc, ch2, skip 2 dc,* repeat from *-* around, finish with 1 ss in 1st dc (18 dc2tog)
  8. 1 ss in next ch-sp, ch2, 1 dc in the same ch-sp = 1 dc2tog, ch2, *dc2tog in next ch-sp, ch2,* repeat from *-* around, finish with 1 ss in 1st dc (18 dc2tog)
  9. 1 ss in next ch-sp, ch2, 1 dc in the same ch-sp = 1 dc2tog, ch1, *dc2tog in next ch-sp, ch1,* repeat from *-* around, finish with 1 ss in 1st dc (18 dc2tog)
  10. Ch1 = 1 sc, 1 sc in next ch-sp, *1 sc in next dc2tog, 1 sc in next ch-sp,* repeat from *-* around, finish with 1 ss in 1st ch(sc) (36 sc)
  11. 1 dc in each sc around, finish with 1 ss in 1st dc (36 dc)
  12. Ch1 = 1 sc, 1 sc in each dc around, finish with 1 ss in 1st ch(sc) (36 sc)
Cut yarn and weave in ends

Tassel

  • Cut a piece of cardboard into desired length of your tassel. Mine is 7,5 cm
  • Wrap the yarn around the cardboard 18-20 times, or until desired thickness.
  • Insert a thread under the yarn at the middle of the cardboard, pull it and make a  tight knot to hold the tassel together.
  • Flip the cardboard to the other side, and cut the yarn at the middle of the cardboard
  • Wrap some yarn several times around at the top of the tassel approx. 1 cm from the top.
  • Attach the tassel to the bottom of the lantern. You can either sew it on or attach it with a small button trough the hole in the bottom. I've also added a bead between the top of the tassel and the button. If you attach it with a button, the tassel can easily be removed and you can also use the lantern on the table.

Attaching the hamp twine
(Edited 22.07.18)
If you don't have hamp twine, you can crochet three strings in equal length and attach them to your lantern.
  • Cut 1 string double the length you want your lantern to hang from.
  • Cut a second string, half the lengt + approx 20 cm of the 1st string
  • Pull the ends of the 1st (longest) strings between the double crochet on rnd 11, outside-in; 12 dc between each end
  • Tie the ends around the 2nd (shortest) string
  • Tie the 2nd string around the neck of the jar, and adjust the two other knots so that all three knots are evenly placed around the jar.
  • Pull the 2nd string between the double crochet on rnd 11, inside-out; 12 dc between each string
  • Pull the crochet cover over the jar.
  • Wrap the the third string around the double 1st string, approx 10 cm from the top. Secure the the end

Hang up you lantern, and enjoy the wonderful summer evenings.
